Places to Stay in Capestang

The pretty town of Capestang is just west of Beziers by 11 kilometres located on a bend on the Canal du Midi and is a wonderful place to base your holiday. It gets its name from the étang that the town sits above. An étang is a large, shallow natural saline lagoon and Languedoc has many of them. Indeed the Mediterranean coast from the Roussillon, through the Languedoc and up to the Camargue in the Rhône region is lined with them and there are many inland ones too. Cap means ‘top’ so this little town took its name from being at the top of the étang and there you have Capestang.
