The medieval town known as La Cité stands proud atop a hill surveying the Aude river and valley and the Bastide Saint-Louis, the ‘modern’ Carcassonne that was built during the reign of Saint Louis in 1260.
This tour will take you to visit both these towns and aims to acquaint you with the history, customs and culture of Languedoc, a beautiful part of the new region of Occitanie.
We begin the day with a 2-hour walking tour of Carcassonne where you will discover the ancient medieval fortress of La Cité and the beautiful the Old Bridge. Along the way your guide will explain the history of the town including the important cloth industry and its military past.
You will walk through the ‘ville basse’ as the village that lies below La Cité is called and enter the medieval town through an ancient gateway and once in La Cité you will learn about the defensive buildings and walk the ramparts to discover how they were designed to protect the inhabitants. This tour will bring the city of Carcassonne to life whilst you walk in the footsteps of the people who lived here in times gone by. The Cathar history is of great importance to this area and during this tour you will learn much about the Cathar crusade that marched on Languedoc in 1208, how Carcassonne was captured and how Lord Trencavel lost his life.
Now it’s time to hop into our mini bus and take the scenic drive to Lagrasse which is one of the ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’. Along the way our guide will begin to tell the history of this region as you take in the stunning views whilst driving through the vineyard and olive grove landscape.
Once you reach Lagrasse our guide will invite you to enjoy a delicious lunch made from local and seasonal produce and accompanied by delicious Corbières wine.
After lunch it’s time for a guided stroll through the narrow cobbled streets of the village and along the way, between the town and the abbey, in squares and behind facades, there are stories to be told and a fascinating medieval history to be revealed. Your walk through the village will take you by the ruined ramparts where your guide will explain how this settlement began many centuries ago. The buildings will uncover their secrets and you will discover how Lagrasse was once an important trading town. The tour includes a visit to the abbey (closed on Thursdays) and as the village is home to a thriving community peppered with many small artisan boutiques and workshop we have allowed time to visit many of them before we end the tour with a visit to a dynamic vinegar producer for a tasting before heading back to Carcassonne.
