Château de Montségur sits on a ‘pog’ or limestone peak that resembles a closed fist raised 1200 meters above you. This is the last stronghold of the Cathars and where the Albigensian crusade came to an end in 1244 when the last Cathars were burnt at the stake.
Montségur is in the Ariège department of Occitanie close to the Pyrénéan mountain chain and this hike gives you some wonderful views of the mountains as we head cross country to the château. You can opt for the shorter walk of 5.5 miles which is an out and back walk, or you can choose the longer circular walk which is 8.7 miles and both walks include an assent of 1700 meters to reach the castle. The walks are quite testing and are aimed at people who regularly hike and enjoy hill walking.
We begin the day when we collect you from your holiday address and take the drive into the Ariège department. To reach this area from Carcassonne takes 1.5 hour and along the way your guide will entertain you with the history of the region and talk about the Cathar history.
The walk begins in a pretty village which we will return to at the end of the day. Once we reach Château de Montségur you have time to explore the fortress and also the excellent museum in the village below where we will enjoy a simple lunch and refresh ourselves before taking the return route.
