The ancient village of Minerve earned its place in history 800 years ago when its lord, Guilhem of Minerve gave refuge to a group of Cathars who had fled from Béziers at the start of the Cathar crusade in 1208. Today it’s an enchanting place sitting between 2 gorges and surrounded by limestone hills that are spread with vineyards.
This three-quarter day tour starts when we pick you up from Carcasonne and head off into the Minervois district and arrive at the village of Minerve 40 minutes later. Here we take a stroll through the village where your guide will explain the Cathar siege that took place here before heading off across the hills for a 1.15hr walk.
The walk is of medium difficulty and starts with quite a climb on very rough terrain but once you have gained height it is a slight uphill walk for the first half-hour and then very easy after that. You should be a regular walker/hiker for this tour and wear good trainers or walking boots.
At the end of the walk you will have the opportunity to discover the ‘natural tunnels’ which can only be accessed during the spring and summer months, before heading back into the village for some free time to explore the village and to enjoy a simple lunch which is included in the price of this tour.
