Taste! Burgundy – Join us on a group tour for 5 nights on June 4 to 8 2021 or arrange your own Private Tour on dates to suit you
Burgundy is the home of terroir. It’s the birth place of this concept and the beating heart of generational wine making in France. Next to Languedoc it’s our favourite wine region in France and a place we would love to introduce you to.
On this 5 night tour the famous Côte-d’Or is included but unlike other Burgundy wine tours we give equal importance to the Chalonnaise and the Mâconnais. Naturally you will want to visit some of the well-known appellations and meet some of the stars of the region however on our tour we also take you off the beaten track to visit small family wineries producing equally fabulous wines but at a fraction of the price.
The landscape is good on the eye and the region is a gastronomic delight, so we will ensure you get to see some of the most spectacular scenery, visit some of the most important places and eat some of the best food around.
The tour will be led by Kate Wardell who is passionate about Burgundy wines. Kate’s knowledge of the region and its wines and the people who make them is superb and she is looking forward to imparting her deep well of knowledge with you.
Day One – We pick you up from Lyon and take the lovely drive to your accommodation in the Mâconnais. We will begin our exploration of the local area including a visit to the iconic Rock of Solutré, a limestone escarpment that overlooks the little commune of Solutré-Pouilly. We will taste the wines that are grown beneath this landmark including Pouilly Fuissé and Saint-Véran.
Day Two – Today we head to Cote du Nuits, home of Clos du Vougeot and Abbaye Notre-Dame de Cîteaux and where Burgundian wine making all began. During this full day we will visit two top class producers and taste noteworthy wines from famous appellations including Nuits-Saint-Georges, Gevry Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny and Vosne-Romanée. Today you will taste all levels of wine from commune level through to 1er cru and of course no visit to Burgundy would be complete without tasting a top class Grand Cru. We also pay a visit to Château Clos de Vougeot and enjoy a delicious lunch in one of our favourite restaurants tucked away in the heart of the vineyards.
Day Three – We head north again but this time not so far as today we are spending time in the beautiful Cote du Beaune where the best white Burgundies come from. We will taste some of the most famous wines produced in Burgundy including Meursault and Puligny Montrachet where we will enjoy a 4 course wine paired lunch. At the end of the day there will be some free time to stroll around the historic town of Beaune.
Day Four – We stay local today, spending the day in the Mâconnais enjoying a tour of this very pretty part of southern Burgundy. Tastings today include Viré Clessé, Uchizy and Azé which may not be as famous as some of their Burgundy cousins but are some of the finest white southern Burgundies you will find. Lunch will be in a village Auberge where tasty local dishes are served accompanied by the wines of the area.
Day Five – The Chalonnaise is great hunting ground for good value red and white Burgundy plus the interesting appellation of Bouzeron where Aligoté reins supreme. We visit some of our favourite small wineries in this area plus a beautiful château for a guided history tour.
Day Six – After breakfast we bid our B&B hosts farewell then head to Lyon airport
