Carcassonne to Avignon En Route Tour | Private Guided Experience

Planning your journey between Carcassonne and Avignon — or travelling in the other direction? Don’t just cover the distance. The road between these two extraordinary cities passes through some of the most culturally and historically dense landscape in all of France, and our private en route tours make sure you arrive having discovered something truly memorable along the way.

Everything Between Two Cities Worth Stopping For

This is a journey through the deep south of France — Roman engineering, papal grandeur, Cistercian light, world-class wine, and contemporary art of the highest order. Most travellers let it blur past the window. Our en route tours bring it into focus, built entirely around what matters to you.

If art is your compass, the options are exceptional. Pierre Soulages — the great painter of black and light, the master of what he called Outrenoir — has left a remarkable trail across this region. The Musée Fabre in Montpellier holds the largest Soulages collection in the world, with five dedicated rooms housing an extraordinary donation made by the artist himself. Sète, his adopted Mediterranean home and the place where he built his studio overlooking the sea, carries a different and more intimate kind of presence.

If history is what draws you, few experiences in Europe compare to standing beneath the Pont du Gard — a Roman aqueduct of such ambition and precision that it has survived two thousand years largely intact. Further along, Avignon itself wears its medieval grandeur openly, from the Palais des Papes — the largest Gothic palace in the world and seat of the papacy for nearly a century — to the famous bridge that still reaches halfway across the Rhône.

If wine is the priority, Châteauneuf-du-Pape needs no introduction. One of France’s most celebrated appellations, it sits in the heart of this route, and a tasting among the galets roulés with the silhouette of the ruined papal château above you is something that stays with you. The broader Côtes du Rhône and Costières de Nîmes offer equally rewarding territory for the curious palate.

And if food is the draw, this stretch of southern France punches well above its weight. From the market culture of Nîmes and Montpellier to tables that have earned serious attention from the guides, there is no shortage of opportunities to eat extremely well — we know exactly where to take you.

Nothing is fixed. Tell us what draws you, and we’ll build the day around it.
