The Corbières & Lagrasse

This wine tour to the Corbières & Lagrasse will take you to a magical place of contrasts where cicadas sing, and buzzards circle lazily against a blue sky above the wild and windswept Corbières hills. The vineyards are perched on rocky hillsides and the roads wind round and round as we make our way towards our first vineyard visit in the heart of the Cru Boutenac. This is an area dedicated to the culture of the vine since Roman times and currently the only cru in the Corbières. We will take a walk through the vines, some of them more than a century old. We will also enjoy a tour of the winery which is ancient but modernised to use the latest techniques to produce fabulous Corbières wines. The award-winning reds are made from a blend of Carignan, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah and the whites from Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Rousanne.

After an extensive tasting of Corbières and Corbières-Boutenac wines we will head for the beautiful village of Lagrasse to enjoy a delicious lunch accompanied by wine from the Corbières. If you join our Classic Corbières tour lunch is the Menu du Jour at an auberge in the village of Lagrasse where you will enjoy a simple but very tasty 3 course lunch.

If you opt for the Gourmet Corbières you will eat at Le Bastion in Lagrasse which is an exciting restaurant created by Fabien De Bruyn and Valentin Renaud, two young chefs who offer creative cuisine highlighting local and seasonal products. They have dubbed their style as avant-garde rurale meaning their dishes combine the gourmet cuisine of Auguste Escoffier blended with modern techniques and the influence of their travels. But do not worry there will be no pretention just delicious simplicity and each of the 3 courses will be paired with local wines by the sommelier.

After lunch you will take a slow stroll around Lagrasse which is one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France and learn a little of the history that spans at least 1000 years. Your route will take you along the narrow cobbled ‘ruelles’ with a view of the abbey then through the market square and finish with a visit to an artisanal vinegar shop for a tasting followed by a tasting of Vermouth. Now it’s time to head off to our final visit of the day in a nearby village and in a different part of the Corbières than our morning visit. You will see how terroir makes a difference and meet a passionate wine maker producing top quality Corbières wines from a small artisanal winery.
